Taipei, Nov. 1－A heavy rain alert has been issued for northern and eastern Taiwan, with an extremely heavy rain warning for Green Island and Orchid Island due to the combined effects of seasonal northeasterly winds and the periphery of Tropical Storm Yutu, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Thursday.
Heavy or extremely heavy rain is expected in northern coastal areas of Keelung, mountains in the Greater Taipei area, and northern and eastern Taiwan, while other regions are likely to see sporadic showers, according to the CWB.
The weather in the north and northeast will be wet and cool Thursday, with temperatures ranging from 21-23 degrees Celsius during the daytime and 17-18 degrees at night, the bureau said.
The CWB said that although Tropical Storm Yutu will continue to weaken as it moves in a north-northwesterly direction, it is expected to bring heavy rain to Taiwan until Friday.
The tropical storm was located 490 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi on Taiwan’s southernmost tip as of 8 a.m. Thursday, packing maximum sustained winds of 83 kilometers per hour and gusts of 108 kph.
The CWB added that gusty winds are expected across Taiwan due to the effect of the strong northeasterly winds and said that coastal areas will see high waves.
