Taiping municipal council president Abdul Rahim Md Ariff said the council received an email from IBT on 21 December. The council is scheduled to receive the certificate from IBT in a ceremony to be held in Berlin dated on 6 Mac.

After chairing the monthly meeting, Abdul Rahim said Taiping had many natural scenic spots including Larut Hill, Taiping Lake, Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve, Batu Kurau eco-tourism and others.

“The listing will motivate Taiping council and relevant agencies to work harder in developing and preserving the natural scenic spots in Taiping, giving the tourism industry in Taiping a boost,’’ he said.

News of Taiping listed in the Sustainable Destinations Top 100 has gone viral in social media and he believes that the listing will help to attract more tourists across the world to visit Taiping.

He said after Taiping was given a certificate as the cleanest city in ASEAN in 2017, it has been making effort to move towards international recognition and participated in the IBT greenery destination entries.

Various government departments and agencies – Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Department of Environment, Department of Forestry, Perak National Park, Wild Life Department, Indah Water, Telekom, Larut and Selama Districts assisted in the process of submitting the applications to IBT.

As the second largest town in Perak, Taiping, founded more than 100 years ago, was formerly known as Larut. It was a tin-mining town attracting many Chinese in 1848. The famous Larut Battle took place due to fighting in securing mining rights. Larut was renamed Taiping after signing of Pangkor Agreement. Taiping means eternal peace and away from war.

The British colonial government once listed Taiping as the capital of Perak. The town carries 33 titles of No 1 in Malaysia. Telegram Department, Department of Survey, wet market, prison, golf course, railway, and others were first set up in Taiping.

Despite Ipoh was later named as the capital of Perak, the eco-tourism development in Taiping offering various destinations had attracted tourists from both local and foreign countries.

The Perak Botanical Garden is also in Taiping. Once it is completed, it will further enhance Taiping’s position in sustainable tourism, attracting more nature lovers to visit Taiping.
