TAIPEI (CNA) — The weather will remain cold and wet around Taiwan over the next two days even though the continental cold air mass affecting the island is weakening, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecast on Dec. 30.
Northeasterly winds and a cloud system to Taiwan’s south will continue to affect the weather around the country until Jan. 2, CWB forecaster Kuan Hsin-ping (官欣平) said.
“It will be wet and cold on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day,” he said.
Anticipating heavy cloud cover over Taiwan on Dec. 31, Kuan said it is unlikely people will be able to see the first rays of the sun over the horizon or the sun’s complete rise on the first day of the new year because of the clouds.
Under the influence of the cold air mass, Chiayi and Tainan reported the lowest temperatures in low-lying areas of Taiwan early Sunday at 10.8 degrees Celsius and 13.4 degrees, respectively.
They were also the lowest in both locations for this winter season so far.
Kuan predicted that temperatures will climb a bit as the cold air mass weakens later Sunday but said it will turn colder again on Monday due the cloud system to Taiwan’s south.
Central and southern Taiwan are expected to see sporadic rain and temperatures that fall as low as 13 degrees on New Year’s Eve, he said.
