TAIPEI (The China Post) – Taiwan is having troubles retaining local talents as many high-school students opt for studying abroad for university. Besides, foreign colleges and companies are also actively recruiting Taiwanese talents.

According to Ko Kuan-ming (柯冠銘), secretary at the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwanese students are choosing which university to attend based on the future job market. Since Taiwan is unable to provide a satisfying job environment, it is natural for students to go overseas to try their luck, Ko said.

“This is Taiwan’s major economic problem. Even if National Taiwan University (NTU) becomes more international, high-school students will still wonder if they can find a decent job and earn a good salary domestically when they graduated,” said Ko.

In recent years, Taiwan’s top universities have introduced several international programs, such as NTU which launched the Global Innovation Joint-Degree Program for talent retention.

Ko thinks that universities are making efforts in terms of the internationalization of Taiwan. Even NTU president Kuan Chung-ming (管中閔) visits Taichung personally to recruit students, which is something universities have never done so far.
