TAIPEI (The China Post) – Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) expressed concerns about the soaring number of “fake news” and the role of Taiwan media in creating social turmoil on the sidelines of his trip to Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage on April 8.
In a Facebook post on the previous day, Ko expressed concerns at media speculations during his recent visit to the United States without providing any further information. The news was further quoted by the Liberty Times and then another TV station which eventually questioned Ko about the same dubious information, leading to the information to be spread all over major media outlets. “This is a typical example of how fake news is formed in Taiwan,” Ko said.
If the Liberty Times can attack imaginary political enemies through such tricks without being recognized and condemned, this is equally worrisome for Taiwan Freedom of speech, Ko warned.
“I don’t really like to use the media to promote myself and I am trying to stay true in terms of who I am and what I do,” Ko further stressed. “I know many politicians will try to interact with the media and hope to create topics for the public to talk about. But I’ve always told my staff that I don’t need to pretend to be someone I am not.”.
