TAIPEI (The China Post) – The U.S. House of Representatives passed the “Taiwan Assurance Act” on April 9 (Eastern Time) after the Senate introduced the bill. The Foreign Affairs Committee also adopted the resolution that approves regular defense arms sales to Taiwan. In response to the Congress’ strong support, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) expressed Taiwan’s sincere appreciation.

According to MOFA, the bill recognizes that Taiwan is an important part of U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy and urges the government to assist Taiwan in terms of participation in international organizations, asymmetric warfare capability, and U.S.-Taiwan Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The bill also calls for U.S. Secretary of State to review the country’s rules of engagement with Taiwan and report the results to the Congress in terms of the implementation of “Taiwan Travel Act.”

Through the bill, the House reiterated the fact that “Taiwan Relations Act” and “Six Guarantees” are the crucial foundation for U.S.-Taiwan relation; it also encouraged visits and interactions between high-level officials of the U.S. and Taiwan based on “Taiwan Travel Act,” the MOFA said

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act. The fact that the Foreign Affairs Committee passed the bill on the eve of the aforementioned law indicates vital significance, the MOFA added.

Keeping a keen eye on future bilateral relation development with the U.S., the MOFA further stressed that it will keep on promoting the cooperative partnership between Taiwan and the United States with pragmatism.
