TAIPEI (The China Post) – According to a study published in The Lancet Planetary Health on April 10, an estimate of 4 million children around the world develop asthma each year due to road traffic pollution. Taiwan even ranked fourth globally, meaning that 420 out of every 100,000 kids are afflicted by the potentially deadly condition, the global research said.
Asthma rate among children has been increasing steadily since the 1950s. Today, it is the most common disease among children worldwide. Researchers found that in the UK and the U.S., youngsters, aged between 1 to 18 years old, account for 19 percent of asthma patients, whose condition can be attributed to nitrogen dioxide pollution.
In the UK, air pollution causes around 40,000 premature deaths each year, including death resulting from childhood illnesses, heart disease, and dementia. This is not only the case in London though; this is global issue that impacts children’s lives worldwide. It is a critical time for governments around the world to take measures to address the worsening situation.
As for the main sources of traffic pollution, it is mainly due to diesel cars. Research results further prove that toxic fumes can expose tens of thousands of children to potentially fatal asthma.
Even though we cannot see the danger at first, studies prove that road traffic pollution is an urgent threat that requires actions worldwide.
