TAIPEI (The China Post) – Have you signed up yet for your free YouBike insurance? Taiwan’s popular bicycle sharing system has added “personal injury insurance” and “third-party liability insurance” to its system for cyclists in both Taipei and Taoyuan since October last year.
Still many users seem to be unaware of the free benefits. The registration process is simple, and it can be done online very quickly so that you can get eligible for up to NT$1 million in benefits in case of an accident.
Even if the aforesaid insurance is free, it does not come automatically. An injured YouBike user learned it the hard way recently and was denied financial compensation for failing to register. The operator is urging all to register as soon as possible for maximum safety.
All you need to do is to log into your YouBike app or website account and select “public bicycle injury insurance,” confirm your card number, and fill out the required insurance information.
The bicycle sharing company said its system in Taipei, New Taipei City, and Taoyuan has started to provide “third-party liability insurance” to cover up fee for cyclists in car accidents since June last year, followed by an added “personal injury insurance” later in October that guarantees riders rights to file claims if they crash on a YouBike.
According to YouBike authorities, hospitalized users will be covered by insurance of NT$1,000 per day and a total compensation up to NT$1 million.
According to media reports, however, many users remain unaware of their rights.
Insurance experts also stress that personal injury insurance only settles claims of registered YouBike riders while membership cannot be shared, advising all frequent users register as soon as possible on either an official YouBike app or the service centers.
