2019 Creative Expo Taiwan highlights new cultural corridor

TAIPEI (The China Post) – The ninth edition of the annual Creative Expo Taiwan will unfold from April 24 to May 5 with the theme “Culture on the Move,” emphasizing cultural dynamism, innovation, and traditions in Taiwan.

Bigger than ever, the expo takes place at five locations along Taipei’s old Civic Boulevard railroad, a new cultural corridor connecting Huashan 1914 Creative Park, Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-Lab), TRW Railway Museum, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, and Taipei Expo Park — Expo Dome. In line with activities, the organizers hope the public can rediscover Taipei through a fresh historical lens.

General Consultant Wei-Hsiung Chan (詹偉雄) and Curator Tammy Chen-Jung Liu (劉真蓉) led a team of designers and other creative professionals comprising not just art and design, but also music and performance, aiming to stimulate creative energy and widen cultural perspectives in Taiwan.

Each exhibition area features a different theme, including “Stage On the Move,” “Places On the Move,” “School On the Move & Infrastructure On the Move,” “Fair On the Move,” to “Culture On the Move.”

At Huashan 1914 Creative Park, “Stage On the Move” hosts a program of more than forty performances, totaling nearly one hundred hours of entertainment, from twenty-nine performing arts groups. The stage itself aims to break down the wall between front- and backstage. One of the performances is puppet master Chen Hsi-Huang, who collaborates with rock band Sorry Youth and spectacularly bridges the gap between traditional and modern arts.

Also at Huashan 1914 Creative Park, Places On the Move introduces local culture from four cities in Taiwan through a series of curated exhibitions. The curators investigate and document the landscape, customs, and traditions of each city, which explains the discourse of these local cultures through a modern lens. The exhibition also brings local brands together by turning markets into the form of unique Taiwanese roadside banquets.
