TAIPEI (The China Post) – A parrot was taken into custody on April 22 for repeatedly yelling “Mama, police!” at the arrival of law enforcement.
The tropical bird, which was on the lookout for danger, was “arrested” by police officers conducting a raid on two alleged drug dealers – a man and a woman.
The parrot almost spoiled the drug raid in the city of Teresina, said the Brazilian authorities, who found large amounts of cocaine, marijuana, and cash at the residence of the suspects.
A journalist from The Guardian said the bird seemed to have invoked its right to remain silent, stressing that “it hasn’t made a sound so far.”
Local police planned to transfer the bird to Teresina Zoo after environmentalists requested that the bird is freed and taught to fly, GloboNews said.
Veterinarian Alexandre Clark remarked, however, that the parrot has remained silent in the presence of police officers.
An officer said that the bird “must have been trained that way” only to warn his owners, seeing that it knew to squawk loudly as soon as the police came near the house.
According to local media outlets, the bird’s owner, nicknamed “India” was arrested twice for drug trafficking.
