More than 6 million employees work overtime

TAIPEI (The China Post) – Taiwan is known for its culture of overworking. Ahead of the International Workers’ Day, local job bank yes123 released a survey that shows how nearly 6 million employees work overtime, especially people working in finance, technology, media, and advertising industries.

Even though the government adopted various regulations to limit overtime work, many workers are still abused by the system, the survey shows. According to yes123, 18.8 percent of workers don’t work overtime while 30.8 percent are still subject to overtime work.

In fact, 50.4 percent of respondents believe that they work overtime, while another 65.7 percent of employees are worried about their health, and 75 percent are considering quitting their jobs. Overall, up to 5.95 million Taiwanese people said that they work overtime.

According to yes123 Spokesperson Yang Tsung-pin (楊宗斌), some employers refuse to pay overtime work at the cost of workers’ rights and health despite recording workers’ work time through an attendance system.

Cross-analysis also show that employees, who suffer from work pressure, work in the finance and insurance sectors, accounting and statistics (73.2 points), information technology (72.8 points), media, public relations, and advertising (71.5 points), medical and biotechnology (68.3 points), as well as transportation and logistics (66.9 points).
