TAIPEI (The China Post) – The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), and the Board of Science and Technology held the Smart Electric Motorcycle Technology Innovation Forum on May 2 with the aim of combining resources across various industries and pushing Taiwan to become a leader in smart e-motor technologies.

Speaking at the event’s opening ceremony, Minister of Economic Affairs Shen Jong-chin (沈榮津) said that Taiwan is a motorcycle country, but only about 1 percent of the 14 million motorcycles nationwide are electric vehicles. If the government can successfully stimulate the cooperation between the industry and academia, there is a huge opportunity for Taiwan to enter and win big in the international market, he added.

According to Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍), previous policies put more emphasis on management and regulatory issues. In the light of new challenges, however, the government should now concentrate its efforts on how to enhance Taiwan’s competitiveness and the growth of the industry through cooperation.

Lin also announced that the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has established the Council of Transportation Technology Industry to help integrate resources from different sectors.

“Since Taiwan is quite experienced in bicycles, machine tools, and aerospace industries, we believe that we can also have success in the smart e-motor industry through better and closer cooperation,” Lin said.
