TAIPEI (CNA) – An Indonesian couple were arrested for allegedly scamming a compatriot out of NT$600,000 (US$19,000) in the urban township of Yuli in eastern Taiwan, local police said on June 2.

The couple, who were only identified as Yanto and Mary, visited Yuli in Hualien County a few days ago from Taoyuan where they met with the victim, another Indonesian surnamed Liu, in an eatery she runs with her Taiwanese husband, according to the Yuli police.

Knowing the victim has long wanted to bring her relatives to Taiwan to work, the couple offered to broker a deal and Liu handed them an unspecified amount of money for that purpose.

However, over the next few days the couple made up different excuses to ask Liu for more money, with the final amount reaching nearly NT$600,000, a police officer said.

Suspecting she was being scammed, Liu reported the matter to the police when the couple asked for another NT$350,000.

Police apprehended the couple on Saturday when Liu handed them the requested payment in a park near the Hualian train station. The suspects have been turned over to Hualian prosecutors office and face charges relating to fraud.
