TAIPEI (The China Post) — A massive fire broke out at the Dadongmen Night Market on June 3, a few hours after Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-Yu filed the permission to use the location for a Kuomintang rally on June 8. The fire department has been investigating the causes of the fire with security footage.
During today’s interview, Han Kuo-yu said that the Hualien County Fire Department should conduct deeper investigations as soon as possible. He also expressed hopes that the government would help the owners of stalls that were destroyed by the fire. He said: “It is no joke that more than 10 stalls were destroyed, so how will families survive if their main source of income was destroyed?”
Hualien Mayor Hsu Chen-Wei went to the scene of the fire to express concern while the chairman of Dongdamen Night Market stated that 44 stands were destroyed. Mayor Hsu promised that once the investigation is over the night market will be restored and renovated.
An investigator from the Hualien County Fire Department revealed that they used a hydraulic excavator to open rooftops and observe the reasoning for the fire. Details of the investigation will be released later.
Hualien Police Station Head Dai Chang-sheng said that if this is somehow connected to criminal activity, police will further investigate. Based on security footage, a car is seen driving past the night market which leads to smoke coming out soon after. Because of the amount of gasoline, explosions were seen and heard at the scene.
The Dongdamen Night Market was constructed during previous Mayor Fu Kun-chi term as a temporary market and cost more than NT$200 million. The night market contains more than 400 stands. Combined with the endorsement and promotion of Hualien’s government, it has emerged as a renowned tourist destination in Hualien.
