TAIPEI (The China Post) — SEMI, the global industry association representing the electronics manufacturing supply chain, released a new report on the status of semiconductor companies on June 4. In the first quarter of 2019, global semiconductor manufacturing equipment shipments reached US$13.8 billion in value, which is down 8 percent from last quarter, and down 19 percent for the year. On the contrary, in the case of Taiwan, shipments grew 36 percent from the previous quarter.

SEMI noted that the data was collected by SEMI along with the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ), as well as data collected from more than eighty semiconductor equipment companies worldwide on a monthly basis.

According to the SEMI report, Taiwan’s semiconductor manufacturing equipment shipments have grown against the trend of global decrease. In the first quarter, the semiconductor equipment industry shipments reached 3.8 billion, a 36 percent increase from the 2.8 billion in the previous quarter and a 68 percent increase from 2.2 billion in the first quarter of 2018.

In the first quarter, Taiwan has performed well, which is in contrast with the Republic of Korea (8 percent decrease), Mainland China (13 percent decrease), North America (14 percent decrease), Japan (41 percent decrease) and Europe (8 percent decrease).

Compared to the performance in the first quarter of 2018, only Taiwan and North America saw an increase in Semiconductor business performances. South Korea had a decrease of 54 percent, Mainland China had a decrease of 11 percent, while Japan and Europe had a decrease of 27 percent and 34 percent respectively.
