TAIPEI (The China Post) – Over 5,000 people in Taichung were found possessing illegal substances last year, with the youngest of them being around seven to eight years old. During Taichung’s municipal general inquiry on June 17, Democratic Progressive Party City Council Member Chiu Su-jen expressed concern over the decreasing age of people affiliated with drug crimes. She emphasized that this trend would seriously hinder the welfare of youngsters and urged mayor Lu Shiow-yen to initiate a fight against drugs by implementing practical policies.
Lu stated that since drug issues have gradually become more severe, the Taichung government already declared a matter of national security. They are currently taking measures to prevent drug crimes. Other city council members demanded the complete eradication of access to drugs in schools to protect the mental health of youngsters.
Chiu pointed out that, according to data collected by local policemen, the Taichung City government has exposed 5,120 individuals in possession of drugs last year. The most notable part of the data was that 90 of them were underage.
Up until May 2019, 2,057 individuals who were caught for the same reason, 29 of which were underage.
Chiu believes that large-scale criminal activity almost always correlates with drug issues. In order to acquire drugs, addicts take to extreme measures by robbing people or even killing their family members when they are not provided with the money to purchase drugs.
Taichung City’s Education Director Yang Chen-sheng said that prevention of drug crimes must start in schools. The government has spread even awareness among teachers, students, and even parents, who are included to be part of the gatekeeper mechanism. So far, 90 parents have been to numerous schools to promote the cause. ●
