Countless cats beckon visitors at a temple in a quiet Tokyo neighborhood. Legend provided by the Gotokuji Buddhist temple says it is the birthplace of beckoning cats, the figurines widely believed to bring good luck and prosperity.

有些旅客為了拍攝一些照片而來到此地,其他人則是為了祈求和許願。

Some visitors come to the temple to snap a few photos, while others pray and make wishes.

因為大量的瓷製貓咪,世田谷區似乎擁有比其他地方更多的好運,居民因而感到自豪。

The cat figurines are so plentiful, the Setagaya neighborhood seems proud to carry more luck than the rest of the city combined.

通往寺廟的街道上禮品店林立,他們販賣印有招財貓圖像伴手禮。

The streets leading to the temple are crammed with gift shops selling anything printed with beckoning cat images.

地方的火車上有招財貓的圖案,寺廟的自動販賣機上也有。

A local train dons the images, and so does the temple’s vending machine.

因為深信招財貓能帶來好運,到訪的遊客無不堅持在爆滿的行李箱中,再為一尊招財貓挪出空間。

And, of course, temple visitors believing in the luck the cats might bring them can obtain more figurines for their overpopulated shelves. ●
