TAIPEI (CNA) — A tropical depression east of the Philippines is expected to develop into a storm by Monday evening or the following day, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said on July 15 .
As of 10 p.m. Monday, the system was located 1,520 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan’s southernmost tip, moving west-northwest at a speed of 26 kilometers per hour, the CWB said.
By Tuesday at the latest, the depression is likely to become a tropical storm, which will pass through the Bashi Channel Wednesday on its current track, the bureau said.
When it enters the channel between Taiwan the Philippines, it will bring rain to eastern and southern areas of Taiwan, while central and northern regions can expect afternoon thunderstorms, the CWB said.
Due to the weather system, Hualien, Taitung and Pingtung counties will experience rain into Thursday, the CWB said.
The weather bureau also issued a warning for rough seas and high waves in coastal areas of southern and eastern Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday.
