TAIPEI (CNA) — Eight counties and cities across Taiwan were braced for heavy rain on the afternoon, after the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued a warning that included a flood alert for some areas.
The heavy rain warning was in effect for Chiayi City and County, Tainan and Kaohsiung cities, and Pingtung, Yilan, Taitung and Hualien counties.
People in those areas should also be on the alert for lightning and strong winds, as well as possible flooding caused by torrential rains, the CWB said.
The bureau said that due to the influence of southwesterly winds combined with thermal convection, the Taipei basin and mountainous areas throughout the country are likely to see heavy afternoon showers.
Meanwhile, daytime temperatures were forecast to rise Sunday to 36 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan and to 33-34 degrees in the rest of the country. In Taitung, high temperatures can be expected due to foehn winds, which are hot, dry downslope winds, according to the CWB.
