The final verdict regarding the inventor of pearl milk tea was announced earlier this week, ruling that it is unnecessary to identify the creator of the popular drink because bubble tea is not a patented product.
In response to the verdict, Liu Yan-lin, public relations manager at Chun Shui Tang, said that they will continue marketing themselves as the “inventor of pearl milk tea.” On the other hand, Huang Cheng-hsian, development manager at Hanlin, was upbeat at the outcome, stressing that the popular drink belongs to all Taiwanese people. Hanlin should carry on popularizing bubble milk tea worldwide, he said.
Chun Shui Tang from Taichung and Hanlin Teahouse in Tainan have been fighting over the title of the inventor of pearl milk tea for the past 10 years.
According to a lover of the hand-shaken drink, however, it does not matter who the inventor is. Their prices are relatively high, so they would not be his first choice on a regular basis. What consumers are really concerned about is the taste, price and convenience, he said. ●
