Chen Po-chien (陳柏謙) was found guilty of killing and dismembering a woman, surname Kao (高) in Huashan Grassland in May last year. Chen was sentenced to death and deprivation of civil rights, the Taiwan Taipei District Court said on Monday.

According to the indictment, the suspect, an archery coach who owns a studio located in Huashan Grassland area, and Kao met in May 2018 as the latter wanted to learn archery. On May 31, Chen attempted to sexually assault Kao, but she resisted. Then Chen proceeded to forcibly raped her, before killing her and dismembering her body to 13 pieces.

On August 2018, prosecutors filed charges for multiple offenses including intentional murder, larceny, damaging and abandoning a corpse. They sought death penalty. On Monday, Chen received capital punishment and deprivation of civil rights for forcibly sexual assault and intentional murder. Chen also received ten months of imprisonment for larceny, four and a half years for damaging and abandoning the body. The case can still be appealed.

The Liberty Times (自由時報) reported that Chen once said he didn’t kill the victim. Instead, he accused a person named Eric as the murderer, while he only assisted in dismembering and abandoning the corpse. However, the court never found the aforesaid person and declined to comment because the procedure was not open to the public.
