Shandong Airlines will cancel charter flights between Jinan and Hualien from Aug. 24, the airline said on Aug. 8, dealing a fresh blow to Taipei following Beijing’s ban on solo travelers visiting Taiwan a week ago.
The weekly charter flights were scheduled to continue between the two destinations every Saturday until late October, but the company said it will stop earlier due to “plan adjustments.”
This is a major blow to Hualien Tourism which has seen arrivals declining in recent years. Shandong Airlines resumed charter flights to Hualien on July 1 after a three-year hiatus with 160 passengers on each flight on average.
According to Hualien County Travel Agency Association Chairman Wu Yung-chang (吳永昌), ten flights will be affected so they are already talking with other airlines to deal with the situation.
Wu said passengers who booked tickets will receive a full refund, but they will have to fly from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport if they want to travel to eastern Taiwan.
