Taichung city will launch direct flights to the Japanese city, Tottori, in September. Politicians from Tottori arrived at Taichung on Aug. 13, and representatives of both regions had a pleasant meeting, and furthermore promised to work collaboratively in the future.
Speakers of Taichung city council welcomed politicians from Tottori with famous Taiwanese goods such as pineapple cakes, as well as traditional handcraft lacquerware. In return, the Japanese brought well-known Japanese wine and other gifts.
Speaker of Taichung city council emphasized the profound relationship the two regions share, mentioning their history of exchanges in the realms of agriculture, tourism, culture and education. The two cities already signed tourism exchange and friendship agreements in 2017 and 2018, and has announced to launch direct flights from September onwards, hoping to boost tourism and further facilitates cultural exchanges between the people.
According to the Japanese officials, the friendship started with the import of Japanese pears from Tottori by then-Taichung County as far as 25 years ago. Speaker of Tottori promised, a group of at least 100 Japanese visitors would be in Taichung for its Lantern Festival show next February. He also invited his counterpart from Taichung to take part in the Great Earth Tottori Sugoi bicycle ride this October.
