TAIPEI (CNA) — Heavy rain is forecast for southern Taiwan as it continues to be affected by a low pressure system, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
The CWB has issued a heavy rain alert for Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung for Tuesday, saying these areas are expected to see persistent downpours during the day.
According to the CWB’s rain warning definitions, heavy rain means accumulated rainfall of 80 millimeters or more within 24 hours or rainfall of 40 mm or more in an hour.
Elsewhere in Taiwan, sporadic showers or thundershowers are possible, in particular in mountainous areas in the afternoon, the CWB said.
Due to the expected heavy rain, daytime highs in southern Taiwan will not go above 29 degrees Celsius Tuesday, lower than the 32 degrees forecast for northern and central Taiwan, the CWB said.
Weakening cloud cover will boost daytime highs by 1-2 degrees from a day earlier in northern and central Taiwan, and high levels of ultraviolet radiation can be expected around midday, the CWB said.
Strong winds are expected to affect the areas north of Miaoli, eastern Taiwan, including Green Island and the Orchid Island, and southern Taiwan.
Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said the air quality was expected to be good in parts of northern and central Taiwan, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung in the south, Yilan and Hualien in the east and Penghu County off Taiwan’s southeastern coast.
Fair air quality was expected in Hsinchu and Miaoli in northern Taiwan, and the Matsu and Kinmen islands, according to the EPA’s Air Quality Index.
