U.S. President Donald Trump has approved the NT$250 billion F-16V jets sale to Taiwan on Aug. 18, to which the island has expressed gratitude. As a response, on Aug. 19 China’s Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) made an announcement requesting the U.S. to immediately cancel the arms sale; Beijing’s second announcement to Taiwan on the same day after warning the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to stop interfering with affairs in Hong Kong.
TAO spokesman, Ma Xiaoguang (馬曉光), said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of mainland China denounced the arms sale to Taiwan and accused the U.S. of interfering with its internal affairs, furthermore violating the one-China policy and what was agreed in the three joint communiqués regarding military support to Taiwan.
Ma added that the deal would harm the U.S.-China ties, the cross-strait relations, and regional peace. Ma said, the U.S. should stop sending “seriously erroneous signals to Taiwan secessionists,” and withdrawal the arms sale, adding that, “nobody should underestimate our will and ability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
TAO then condemned president Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and DPP for jeopardizing cross-strait shared interest by turning against mainland for ‘protection’ provided by U.S.’ self-interested regional tactics, bringing shame to the mainland’s history.
Mark Esper, the new U.S. Secretary of Defense, said during the Senate hearing on July 16 that the U.S. had and will continue to show support towards one-China policy. However, Esper said that as Beijing does not oppose the use of violence for unification, and has intensified military drills and actions in the strait, the U.S. follows the Taiwan Relations Act, and would not terminate arms sales to Taiwan in order to ensure the island’s national security.
Almost a month after Esper’s statement, Trump has approved the arms sale, intensifying U.S.-China tension.
