New UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced embarrassment earlier this week after his girlfriend was barred from visiting the United States.
Carrie Symonds, 31, planned to travel across the Atlantic as part of her job with a U.S.-based environmental group, but the American authorities have blocked the request.
British media reported that the decision could stem from a 5-day visit she made last year to East Africa, a region riven by civil war.
During their trip, they met with official from Somaliland to discuss women’s issues and sea pollution. The U.K. is among a handful of nations which have diplomatic relations with Somaliland, which broke away from neighboring Somalia in 1991.
But crucially, the U.S. – which backs Somalia – does not, leading to her ESTA application being refused outright.
