The actress Angelina Jolie was seen tearfully dropping her 18 years-old son Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt off to the Yonsen University in South Korea where he will study biochemistry. However, the reasons why Jolie chose to send her son off to South Korea instead of Ivy League colleges drew people’s attention.
According to a source that previously told the U.S. weekly magazine PEOPLE, Maddox was taking steps to prepare for his big move, and had been accepted into other universities, but chose Yonsei.
In addition, South Korea is not far from the mansion that Jolie owns in Cambodia, making it easier for Jolie’s family to visit Maddox. She also hopes that his stay in the northeast Asian country will allow him to better understand the region’s cultures.
Yonsei University was founded in 1885 and is one of the top three prestigious universities in South Korea, the other two being Seoul National University and Korea University.
Yonsei University is known for its Christian values, long history and internationalization.
Yonsei is part of a handful of universities in Asia that offer biochemistry courses in English. “I look forward to everything he will accomplish,” Jolie previously told PEOPLE. “[I am] nothing but proud.”
Angelina Jolie and Brad pitt had been married for 12 years, have three biological children, and adopted three children from different countries. The eldest son Maddox from Cambodia was adopted by Jolie and Pitt in 2002 and turned 18 this year.
