Japanese animator Makoto Shinkai’s “Weathering with You” box office earnings tops 10 billion Japanese yen (about NT$3 billion), becoming the first movie to achieve this accomplishment in Japan’s new imperial Reiwa era.
With “Your Name” and “Weathering with You” both consecutively grossing more than 10 billion yen, Makoto Shinkai became the second Japanese director followed by Hayao Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, to have achieved such a feat.
The accomplishment is outstanding. Makoto Shinkai wrote on Twitter expressing gratitude towards the audience for supporting the film. The movie also enhanced the popularity of Daigo Kotarō and Mori Nana who voiced for the characters.
The story of “Weathering with You” revolves around teenage runaway, Hodaka Morishima. In an endlessly rainy Tokyo, he meets a girl named Hina Amano who has the uncanny power to manipulate the weather. Through this sad yet beautiful love story, a secret about the world is revealed, one that only they both know.
“Weathering with You” will be released in Taiwan on Sept.12.
