Mercedes brings luxury e-mobility to Frankfurt with Vision EQ S

Merecedes' five-metre-long Vision EQ S concept, which will be on the road within two years, sets itself apart from conventional saloons such as the S-Class due to its unusually flowing shape and all-round lighting concept.

(dpa) – Mercedes is planning to take the S-Class saloon down electric avenue as the top model for the German manufacturer’s EQ family.

Visitors of the IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt will be treated to a first look at the Vision EQ S concept during the public days between September 12-22.

The 5-metre-long luxury concept, which will be on the road within two years, sets itself apart from conventional saloons such as the S-Class due to its unusually flowing shape and all-round lighting concept.

Inside, Mercedes wants to break new ground with striking light worlds and a new display and operating system on large screens.

By contrast, the design and drive of the platform, which was developed exclusively for e-mobility – with one motor on each axle and the battery in the bottom plate in between – is fairly conventional.

For the model on show in Frankfurt, Mercedes speaks of a battery capacity of about 100 kWh, which should enable a range of up to 700 kilometres.

With the help of a 350-kW charger, the battery can quickly reach 80 per cent capacity in less than 20 minutes.

The two engines together produce 476 hp and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 4.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of more than 200 km/h.
