TAIPEI (The China Post) — New Taipei City announced to open《Pokémon GO Safari Zone》from Oct. 3 to Oct. 6. in the New Taipei Metropolitan Park and the Japanese Pokémon Company will together organize the four-day event, providing players with a chance to snatch rare collections of lovely monsters, including secret beasts from South Africa. What’s more? Up to 60 locations across the city are set for catching Pokémon, encouraging visitors to explore New Taipei City along with their search of Pokémon.
“Pokémon GO” was released in 2016 and has instantly gone viral around the world, and its popularity has not dropped since then in Taiwan. Take “Pokémon GO Safari Zone in Tainan” as for instance, the 5-day event held in Tainan Chimei Museum last November attracted more than 1 million visitors and brought in over NT$ 1.5 billion in revenue. The event has left many people to wonder what is the secret behind Pokémon’s global success.
“Pokémon GO” is a mobile game adaptation of the 20-year-old anime “Pokémon,” which has accompanied most of Taiwanese during their childhood in the 80s and 90s. Therefore, the sense of nostalgia is one of the main factors that fuelled the craze. What people are playing is more than a game, but a memory!
Furthermore, Pokémon has creatively combined the game and reality, encouraging players to go outside and take a walk while trying to catch a Pokémon. The game has also motivated the elderly to exercise more and maintain a social life with those that share the same interest.
The last reason might be that Pokémon GO can be played at any moment, any place, with no time restriction nor pressure to finish the game. Players can stop and pick it up again anytime they want.
