TAIPEI (The China Post) — Taiwan psychological horror film “Detention,” adapted from a survival horror video game, depicts the intimidating atmosphere of the learning environment in Taiwan during the White Horror era (1947-1987). Due to martial law, teachers and students who were accused of inappropriate speech could be arrested. “Detention” brought in NT$ 18 million to keep the top spot on its first day. On Saturday, “Detention” had earned NT$27 million on the second day, defeating “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale” which received NT$23 million on its first day.
In response to the hit film, the Transitional Justice Commission (TJC) revealed the last words from three of the victims during the White Terror period. “Only if we find the truth in history, society could jointly face the past.”
The three victims include a Taiwan independence activist, Chiang Ping-hsing who was involved in an armed rebellion for Taiwan Independence, Chang Ju-sung, who was executed in the Dajia case, and Chen Chih-hsiung, who was sentenced to death by the government in Japan as a result of his involvement in the Taiwan independence movement.
The TJC said that they would keep on revealing the truth in history by releasing records in an attempt to disclose the illegal behaviors under the authoritarian regime to the public and clarify the perpetrators’ responsibility.
