Indonesian reporter, Veby Mega Indah, from the Indonesian-language news outlet Sura Hong Kong News, was shot by a Hong Kong police officer on Sept.29 when covering the protest in Hong Kong, will permanently lose sight in her right eye, her lawyer said on Wednesday.
Ms. Veby’s lawyer states that the reporter was shot by a rubber bullet when reporting the “global anti-totalitarianism” protest in the Wan Chai area.
With a press pass, Ms. Veby had been wearing a highly visible vest and a helmet with the word “press” written on it when she was injured. She was standing in the media area, not amid the protesters, meaning that the police officers should have been able to tell her apart from the crowd. The attorney will file criminal complaints against the Hong Kong police.
Tensions between Hong Kong protesters and police officers have been soaring. On Oct.1, a 17-year-old student was shot by a police officer with a live bullet to his chest.
