As the only temple in Taiwan dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess Mazu from Meizhou Mazu Ancestor Temple, Lugang Mazu Temple dates back to the end of the Ming dynasty in 1591. Lukang was an important seaport in the 18th and 19th centuries. It became a booming place to which many talented people flock to. In the temple, the pillars, wood carving, and paintings are all attributed to the masters of that time.
