【看英文中國郵報學英文】上個月,數百萬名民眾不分國家、文化、世代紛紛走上街頭,要求立即正視岌岌可危的生態危機 ,例如:全球總人口上升、生物多樣性的減少。

Millions of people took to the streets last month, uniting across countries, cultures and generations to demand urgent action on the escalating ecological emergency, the rising global population and loss of biological diversity.

這些迫切的議題都列在聯合國的「全球永續發展目標」內。全球永續發展目標是為了追尋一個更美好且永續發展的未來。因此,對於議題的了解尤其對於年輕一代是相當重要的,以此才能夠推動我們城市永續的未來。

Understanding these pressing issues, which are summarized in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) – a global blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all – is essential to shaping our future cities with sustainability, especially for young people.

邁向永續的未來 | Achieve a Better and More Sustainable Future

上週四,科思創全球永續發展負責人韓思樂博士出席一場由歐洲在台商務協會(ECCT)及台北市美國商會(AmCham)聯合主辦的永續午餐會上分享其對於永續發展的觀察。

Dr. Christian Haessler, head of Global Sustainability, Covestro, shared this observation on Thursday during a luncheon co-hosted by the European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan (ECCT) and The American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (AmCham).

韓思樂博士與China Post分享:「這是與世界各地年輕世代正在進行的對話。」他強調去年科思創最成功的創新計畫都是受到永續理念的啟發。「我們多年來都有跟上循環經濟的發展。」循環經濟是一種需要產業鏈共同合作、新的商業模式與對於化學知識了解的創新經濟系統。

“This is an ongoing discussion with younger generations worldwide,” Haessler told The China Post, stressing that Covestro’s most successful projects last year were all about innovation inspired by sustainability. “We have been following on this trend for many years,” he said about the circular economy – an “innovative economic system that requires co-operation, new business models and chemistry knowledge”

科思創是聯合國全球契約的領跑者之一。科思創上個月憑藉其以溫室氣體二氧化碳替代原油來製成塑膠原料的技術,入圍了2019德國總統獎(又稱德國未來獎)。

Covestro is a LEAD company of the United Nations Global Compact, as well as a nominee in the finals for the 2019 German President’s Award (German Future Prize) with the technology for using CO2 exhaust gas in plastics production to save crude oil.

韓思樂進一步分享:「二氧化碳能夠取代原油來製成塑膠製品。這對於資源使用效率以及循環經濟發展來說是一大創新貢獻。」科思創與德國亞琛工業大學正在合作研究使用二氧化碳來製造合成纖維及其他化學用品。

“Plastic products can be manufactured with carbon dioxide (CO2) instead of using crude oil,” Haessler said. “This is an innovative contribution to resource efficiency and a circular economy.” Covestro and RWTH Aachen University are also working on the manufacture of synthetic fibers and other chemicals using CO2.

尋找創新的素材 | Finding Innovative Material Solutions

根據聯合國統計,到了2050年,每十個人就有將近七個人會居住在都市。屆時移入都市的人口將為房價、能源消耗、交通等問題帶來嚴重影響,這也是全球永續發展目標正致力改善的問題。身為高科技聚合物材料提供商,科思創致力於找尋創新材料作為解決辦法,以讓我們的城市更適宜居住。

According to the United Nations, nearly seven in 10 people around the world will live in cities by 2050. As a result, migration to urban areas is expected to have a strong impact on housing costs, energy consumption, transportation and other issues that are tackled through the UN SDGs. As a leading producer of high-tech polymers, Covestro is committed to finding innovative material solutions to advance the livability of our cities.

另外,韓思樂也點出,現在城市基礎建設發展、高效能建設、永續的能源供應和未來的交通工具都需要透過城市規劃,進一步制定標準規範。他說:「我們必須以顧客為出發點來處理都市化的問題,包括生活方式、交通、高效節能解決方案以及建築材料。」

The development of urban infrastructure, efficient construction, sustainable power supply as well as the future of mobility require the adoption of proper standards by city planners, Haessler pointed out. “We need a customer-oriented approach to address increased urbanization, including lifestyle, transportation, energy-efficient solutions and construction materials.”

在這樣的背景之下,年輕人在未來社會將扮演重要的角色。因此,科思創也規劃了符合各年齡層年輕人的全球及區域性教育計畫。自2017年起,科思創攜手聯合國合辦「地球衛士青年獎」競賽,旨在獎勵年紀介於18至30歲,對於世界未來有想法的年輕人。

Against this backdrop, youth have an important role in society today and tomorrow. Covestro has developed programs at global and regional levels for young people across all age groups. Since 2017, it has partnered with the United Nations for its “Young Champions of the Earth” competition, aimed at young people aged between 18 and 30 with a big idea for the world’s future.

韓思樂表示:「我們的商業、產業、以及企業社會責任都緊扣著永續發展目標。」另外,他也強調循環經濟發展中塑膠回收再利用的重要性,並表示:「塑膠的利用也是建立永續發展的解決辦法之一。問題著重於使用完的塑膠後來去了哪裡。」

“Our business, our industry, our CSR are all related to the sustainable goals (UN SDGs),” said Haessler, who stressed the importance of developing a circular economy in which plastic can be reused. “Plastic is also a solution for a more sustainable world. The question is what happens after it is used,” he remarked.

為循環經濟發展盡一份心力 | Contribute to the Development of a Circular Economy

科思創每年在世界各地教導孩子們關於科學和永續發展的議題,期望透過教育來推動對抗氣候變遷的實際行動。因此,科思創在台灣的企業社會責任活動包括為聽障學生、全台祖父母和孫子女舉辦的多元化STEM科教活動(科學、科技、工程及數學)。

The company reaches thousands of children worldwide every year to teach science and sustainable development topics to future generations and drive climate action by educating kids. Its CSR activities in Taiwan include STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) programs with diversity and inclusion elements for hearing-impaired students and grandparents and grandchildren across Taiwan.

另外,台灣科思創更攜手國家公園和博物館來執行環境保護故事計畫,三年內已經觸及三萬四千多名兒童。在聯合國永續發展目標綱領下,產業界、學術界、以及政府能夠一齊面對全球挑戰,打造更美好的未來。

It also partners with national parks and museums for its environmental protection program and has reached more than 34,000 children within 3 years. Under the guidance of the UN SDGs, industries, academies and governments can tackle global challenges and make the world a brighter place together.

韓思樂提到:「台灣能夠迅速地採用新商業模式,但因現今全球議題複雜多變,問題不能單靠一個國家解決,它們是全球的問題。其中,亞洲是垃圾塑料的熱點,台灣能夠為循環經濟的發展盡一份心力。」

“Taiwan is quick in adopting new businesses. Today’s complex changes cannot be solved by one country. They are global problems,” Haessler noted. “Asia is a hot spot for plastic waste. We hope that Taiwan can contribute to the development of a circular economy.”

韓思樂訪台期間,也參與了主題為《為年輕世代鋪路》的天下企業公民國際論壇,台灣科思創亦以其在科學教育活動的積極創新貢獻,連續三年獲頒天下企業公民獎。另外,他也造訪台北歐洲學校,鼓勵年經學子思考永續生活方式。

During his visit to Taiwan, he also participated in the 2019 CommonWealth International CSR Forum is “Youth Empowerment,” during which Covestro Taiwan received the Corporate Social Responsibility Awards for its progressive innovation in science education activities. He further met with students from Taipei European School to encourage them to think and live sustainably.
