A new online calculator lets readers determine which books of Olga Tokarczuk, the winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature, they should first read, depending on available time, reading speed and other factors.
The calculator was created ahead of the December 10 Nobel award ceremony for the Polish author using Omni calculator, an online platform for tools that make simple calculations to help people make everyday decisions.
Enter in how much time you have free and how fast you read and the calculator will show which books are best suited for you. The default option shows the books ranked by readers as best, in descending order.
Non-Polish speakers will need to get the Chrome browser to translate the menu by right clicking on the page and selecting “Translate to English”.
For instance, if you’re an average speed reader taking a holiday for a few days over Christmas and you want to spend an hour a day reading, the calculator recommends the novel “Primeval and Other Times” (“Prawiek i inne czasy”), supplemented by a 70-page collection of short stories.
For those with all the time in the world, the 900-page long “Books of Jacob” (“Ksiegi Jakubowe”) will top the list.
Tokarczuk won the 2018 Nobel prize “for a narrative imagination that with encyclopaedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life.”
