American singer-actor Lady Gaga, who was nominated for the Oscars best actress this year, has not been able to perform in China due to her controversial meetings with the spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, in 2016. Still, there are many die-hard fans of Lady Gaga in China. On Nov. 30, a Chinese netizen wrote on the Weibo account “LadyGagaChinaOfficial,” a Chinese social media, that he was not a fan of Lady Gaga anymore because Lady Gaga followed a person supporting the Hong Kong movement.
The post was triggered by a screenshot that showed Lady Gaga’s official account following a pro-Hong Kong democracy account @EmilyWaiYi. The screenshot went viral and sparked Chinese anger. The introduction of the account states: “Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our times,” which triggered outrage among the Chinese fans of Lady Gaga.
In response to the screenshot, “LadyGagaChinaOfficial” still tried to defend Lady Gaga despite her previous meeting the Dalai Lama and her open support for Taiwan independence. However, the netizen said that he was not a fan anymore after she expressed support for the Hong Kong protest, adding “national interest is always the priority.”
