Default apps on Android: How to make sure the right app always opens

When you get a new phone, links always tend to open on some strange browser preinstalled by the smartphone manufacturer. Android lets you set exactly which apps open for which functions.

When you get a new phone, links always tend to open on some strange browser preinstalled by the smartphone manufacturer. Or maybe it’s videos or other files that open with the wrong app.

To make sure your preferred app is the default, you need to head over to Android’s settings area for standard apps.

From Android version 9 on, you simply open the settings menu and go to Apps and Notifications, then Advanced and select Standard Apps. The steps may vary slightly if your phone is from a manufacturer that has a modified version of Android.

Once in this area, you can set the specific app you want for a list of functions, from browsing the web to making payments and sending messages.
