Tourists from all around the world suddenly found themselves trapped in Taiwan in the early stages of the pandemic; some of them being unable to return to their home countries. To help deal with this abrupt turn of events, some have formed a support group to seek help in finding a job in Taiwan.
Lea, a 31-year-old real estate agent from Argentina, had been on a Southeast Asia tour when she suddenly found herself stuck in Taiwan because of a layover flight.
Due to the pandemic, many countries began to close borders, and Lea had to stay in Taiwan after her flight got canceled.
Left with no other choice, Lea had to wait out the pandemic in a foreign country.
最終，Lea聯繫上一名願意提供她住宿的法國人。莉亞表示，她遇到許多處境相似的外國人，這也促使她於4月8日在臉書創建了名為「Stuck in Taiwan-Best Place to Be」的粉絲團。
Luckily, she got in contact with a French woman who was willing to provide her with housing.
Lea said that she had also found many foreigners who were in a similar situation, which then inspired her to create a support group on Facebook called “Stuck in Taiwan — Best Place to Be” on April 8.
The ultimate purpose of the support group is to provide a platform and community of assistance for foreigners who are stuck in Taiwan due to the pandemic.
Currently, foreigners from France, Turkey, Lebanon, Argentina, and the United States have joined the group to seek help.
The support group recently posted a short video online not only sharing with Taiwan why and how they arrived here, but also thanking the government.
In the video, many expressed the sentiment that Taiwan is an extremely safe place to be while the virus continues to spread in other countries and said they were very happy to be here.
However, as most had arrived with a tourist visa, the extended trip has led to money running out and left them with no way to work.
To this, many in the group expressed their desire to work to support themselves in Taiwan and appealed to the government for a temporary working permit.
While finding temporary jobs is the main priority for many foreigners in the support group, many also want to apply for work visas. Since most foreigners came on tourist visas, it is extremely difficult for them to apply in Taiwan because of the administrative requirements involved.
