Vice Premier Chen Chi-mai calls on Kaohsiung residents to vote

TAIPEI (The China Post) — Ahead of the Kaohsiung Mayor’s recall vote, Vice Premier Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) posted to Facebook on Friday, urging Kaohsiung residents to vote to decide the city’s future with an image of himself taken at a Taiwan High-Speed Rail’s station.

“Tomorrow’s recall vote, whether your choice is for or against, is a critical moment in the history of our hometown Kaohsiung. So, come out and vote, and use your votes to decide the future of our hometown Kaohsiung!”

“We, Kaohsiung people, are not unscathed,” he added, the scars of the Kaohsiung Incident (Formosa Incident) are our pride and democracy is in Kaohsiung residents’ DNA.

He concluded by urging all Kaohsiung residents to vote for “The Hometown We Love” to determine the residents’ future. 

Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), a Kaohsiung native, was defeated by Han, 61, during the Kaohsiung mayoral election in November 2019.

The ruling DPP had held Kaohsiung since December 1998, and two independents Chu Mei-feng (璩美鳳) and Su Ying-kuei (蘇盈貴).
