TAIPEI (CNA) — A body found at sea near Xiaoliuqiu island off Taiwan’s southwestern coast could be that of a Korean tourist who has gone missing, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) said Tuesday.
A body was spotted lying face down on the seabed on Monday afternoon by a person diving near Shanfu Fishing Harbor, and it was identified as a Korean man based on the person’s external features, according to the CGA.
In investigating the case, the CGA found two rented motorbikes near the harbor where the body was found, which led them to a car rental on the island.
Surveillance footage there showed two men, a Taiwanese surnamed Wu (巫) and a Korean tourist, renting the vehicles on Sunday afternoon, the CGA said, and efforts are now being made to determine if the Korean in the video, who has not been located, is the same person as the man found dead.
The whereabouts of the Taiwanese man are still unknown, and the CGA said it will cooperate with other search and rescue units to try to find him.
