Heat warnings issued for six cities, counties around Taiwan

TAIPEI (CNA) — The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has issued an “orange” heat alert for Hualien County, warning that temperatures could reach 38 degrees Celsius during the day in the eastern county on Tuesday.

A “yellow” heat alert was released for Taipei in northern Taiwan, Pingtung County, Kaohsiung, and Tainan in southwestern Taiwan, and Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan warning of temperatures of 36 degrees, according to information on the CWB official website.

The high temperatures are the result of a Pacific high pressure system hovering over Taiwan and dry winds from the southwest, the CWB said, and it forecast partly cloudy or sunny skies for most of the island Tuesday with possible thundershowers in mountainous areas.

Daytime highs are expected to reach at least 34 degrees in all parts of Taiwan, the CWB forecast.
