TAIPEI (The China Post) — Dagang Bridge (大港橋), Taiwan’s first rotating swing bridge was inaugurated on Monday. The bridge connects Kaohsiung’s Pier-2 Art Center (駁二藝術特區) with the Peng-lai Commercial Harbor area (蓬萊商港區).
The inauguration ceremony was presided by acting Kaohsiung mayor Yang Ming-jou (楊明州) and Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍).
Dagang Bridge is 110 meters in length and varies between five to 11 meters in width.
The bridge can carry a maximum of 550 pedestrians and cyclists at a time. By crossing the bridge, the walking time between the Peng-lai Commercial Harbor area and Pier-2 Art Center is shortened by 30 minutes.
The Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) invested a total of NT$320 million (US$10.67 million) to construct the Dagang Bridge.
According to TIPC Chairman Lee Hsien-yi (李賢義), the bridge is not only the first swing bridge in Taiwan but also the longest swing bridge in Asia.
As a result of its extensive view and convenience, the bridge is expected to become a popular tourist attraction.
