From June to September, the summer season is the best time of the year to view and photograph the milky way in Taiwan. In clear, sunny weather with no clouds, no light hazards, and a wide-open view, you can look up and see a starry sky across Taiwan.
The sparsely populated areas are especially suitable for stargazing, including mountains, suburbs, and the beach. Here are a few places in Taiwan that are suitable for stargazing and viewing milky way!
三仙台 | Sanxiantai
Sanxiantai, located in Taitung’s Chenggong Township, has been selected as one of the “14 Most Beautiful Starry Skies in Taitung.” The attraction was once chosen as one of Taiwan’s top five stargazing sites by a travel platform, attracting countless astrology fans and photographers from around the world.
It is very romantic to sit on the shore and listen to the waves while looking up at the starry sky. With the signature eight cross-sea arch bridge as the backdrop, many photographers will capture the stunning night sky from the shore.
屏東恆春貓鼻頭 | Mobitou Park
The Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung, the southernmost part of Taiwan, features many perfect stargazing locations due to its flat land, low light and limited air pollutions.
The most popular scenic spot, Hengchun Mobitou Park, located near the Kenting National Park, is one of the best stargazing spots in southern Taiwan. Besides, the park is also where the annual event “Milky Way Tour” on Chinese Valentine’s Day unfolds each year.
Maobitou is located on the western promontory at the southern tip of Taiwan, where there is little light pollution, and as long as the weather is clear with little moonlight, the chances of seeing the glittering Milky Way are very high.
合歡山 | Hehuanshan (Mount Hehuan)
位於中台灣的合歡山多年來都是熱門賞銀河地點，去年獲國際暗天協會（International Dark-Sky Association，IDA）認證為全台第一座暗空公園，人氣更是水漲船高，成為國際觀星點。
Hehuanshan in central Taiwan is another popular stargazing spot. Last year, the area was designated as the nation’s first Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA).
Thanks to such international recognition, the spot has drawn countless photographers to capture the breathtaking starry night sky.
The four best spots for stargazing include Kunyang Parking, Wuling Parking, the cabin at the foot of Shimenshan and the first observatory on the Hehuanshan main peak trail (Maya observatory).
屏東滿洲港口吊橋、屏東瑪家桃花源露營區 | Gangkou Suspension Bridge & Pingtung Majia Leisure Farm
The agricultural and recreational park in Majia Village, Pingtung County, has an altitude of about 900 to 1,100 meters above sea level. It offers a pleasant and quiet environment for getting away from hustle and bustle of city life.
The Gangkou Suspension Bridge, also known as the Ping-E Highway in Pingtung County, is where the Gangkou River flows into the Pacific Ocean, making it one of the most iconic landmarks on the east coast of Hengchun Peninsula.
The bridge is also far from the city center, offering the Milky Way’s best view.
