TAIPEI (The China Post) — Veteran actor and comedian Peng Chia-Chia（澎恰恰), who lost NT$240 million (US$ 8.1 million) borrowed from an underground bank to make a film, announced his bankruptcy on Thursday.
The 64-year-old actor said he cannot repay his debt during a press conference with pal, comedian Hsu Hsiao-shun (許效舜). Still, he asked for some time to repay his creditors.
He has already repaid NT$120 million (US$ 4 million) and he will continue to honor his debts through work in the future, the comedian said in the press conference.
Peng blamed himself on being “too naive” in 2009 when he intended to film a movie and made a NT$40 million (US$1.36 million) investment.
The deal was eventually unsuccessful, leaving him unable to fund the project, he said, “Then I went around to raise money.”
He borrowed money from illegal underground banks until now but he later realized that he couldn’t get out of the debt so he declared bankruptcy.
Hsu said that he was recently awakened by a shocking SMS from Peng in the middle of the night. Peng’s private message read: “If anything happens to me, please take care of my family.”
Hsu responded saying: “If you’re not afraid of death, there’s nothing you can’t face.”
Hsu choked up after hearing the shocking message and said that he couldn’t let someone who has been taking care of him for 30 years feel this way, he said.
There aren’t many people who can make people laugh, and I hope that Peng Cha Cha can tell his friends more about his feelings instead of blaming himself, Hsu continued.
Peng chia chia is a TV host and actor, known for movie such as “Bang Bang Formosa” (寶島大暴走, 2012) and “Lion Dancing” (鐵獅玉玲瓏, 2014).
Peng and his partner, Hsu Hsiao-shun, have worked together for years. Their comedy show “Lion Dancing” (鐵獅玉玲瓏) was aired from 1999-2002.
