TAIPEI (CNA) — Local stargazers wanting the best possible view of the Perseid meteor shower should head to the south or east of Taiwan where better weather conditions are forecast as the celestial event reaches its peak late Wednesday, Central Weather Bureau (CWB) data showed.
Cloudy to clear skies are forecast in Hualien, Taitung and areas south of Tainan City, while greater cloud cover and rain are likely in most other parts of the country, according to the CWB.
The best time to watch the Perseids, one of the most prolific meteor showers of the year, is 10 p.m. to midnight, the Taipei Astronomical Museum said.
Observation conditions should remain ideal for a few days, with the CWB forecasting good weather through Friday night.
The Perseid meteor shower lasts several days, with a peak of more than 100 meteors per hour from a radiant near the North Star, where the Perseid meteoroids hit the Earth’s atmosphere and burn up, according to the museum.
The shower is being streamed live on the museum’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSZYfZhpHUnpGGdgUhiYEEw
