Pilot dead after engine failure during training mission

TAIPEI (The China Post) — The pilot of an F-5E fighter jet, which crashed into the ocean earlier Thursday morning off the coast of Taitung County, has been pronounced dead.

According to the Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部), Pilot Chu Kuan-meng (朱冠甍), who managed to bail out of the aircraft upon crash landing, was found 13 minutes later.

He was then brought to the Taitung Mackay Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:27 a.m., the hospital said. 

The F-5 fleet has gradually been retired from front-line combat missions and is now fully deployed at the Taitung Chihhang Air Base, mainly serving as training aircraft for new pilots departing the base.
