TAIPEI (The China Post) — The National Communications Commission (NCC, 國家通訊傳播委員會) revealed on Tuesday that channels including Global News TV, CNN and FRANCE 24 may obtain the Channel 52 slot following CTi News’ license cancelation on Dec. 11.

Earlier last month, all seven commissioners rejected CTi News’s license renewal application on grounds ranging from “spreading disinformation and biased reporting,” local Chinese-language media reported.

According to NCC specialist Huang Juei-di (黃睿迪), a total of 43 out of the 64 TV operators in the country have since submitted channel-change plans.

Among these, China Network Systems Co. (CNS, 中嘉), has applied to replace CTi News with Global News while Dafeng TV Ltd. (大豐) applied to have CNN take channel 52.

In addition, around 21 other TV stations asked for channel 52 to be left vacant for the time being.

Huang added that the application of FRANCE 24 was submitted by CYC Shih-Hsin Cable Television (CYC, 世新) and Kuo-Shen Cable Television (KSTV, 國聲) as a replacement for channel 52.

He argued it was a special choice as the channel focuses more on news related to European countries with a focus on France. The channel is also broadcasted exclusively in English.
