KMT chairman welcomes Chao Shao-kang to follow party rules

TAIPEI (The China Post/ANN) — Kuomingtang (KMT) Chairman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) on Monday sighed deeply at the news that media personality Chao Shao-kang (趙少康) plans to rejoin the opposition party and eventually run for the KMT chairmanship.

Asked by reporters during an event in Pingtung, the chairman stressed that “elections for the party’s public offices should follow a due mechanism.”

In light of the ruling party’s control over Taiwan politics, Chiang said that the opposition welcomes “all friends who are willing to support the Kuomintang’s ideas; join or return to the Kuomintang with open arms.”

“Mr. Chao is willing to return to the Kuomintang to contribute to the party. I believe that he is absolutely willing to help the party no matter where he is,” he continued.

The KMT chairman, however, stressed that “the Kuomintang has a democratic mechanism for the election of the party’s public offices. All party members are equal before the mechanism and must respect and abide by the party’s current rules.”

The KMT does not speak in one voice, he went on. If you have different ideas and opinions, you can take them out and discuss them, he continued.

He explained that this is also why it is hoped that more people will join the Kuomintang. Everyone’s opinions will be fully discussed within the Party to form a consensus and work together, he pointed out.

Chao Shao-kang, chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation of China (BCC, 中國廣播公司), announced earlier that day that he submitted an application to resume his KMT membership while stressing that he has the support of former Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu.
