KMT head won’t comment on who is ‘best candidate for chairmanship’

TAIPEI (The China Post) — Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) Chairman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) said on Wednesday that he “respects” the opinion voiced by Taipei City Councilor Chin Hui-Chu (秦慧珠) about New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi (侯友宜) on who is “the best candidate for the KMT party chairman position.”

Chiang was responding to Chin’s recent statement that there is no “best” candidate for the KMT chairmanship, only “good ones,” and she believes that Hou is suitable for that position.

Speaking with local media, Chiang said he respects others’ opinions on the matter but stressed that the most important thing that the KMT needs to do now is to make the right decisions and stand with the public.

As the lead opposition party, he believes the KMT’s presence and voice need to be “felt” by the people and added that the KMT chairman position will be decided by party members.

In addition, Chiang responded to recent criticisms directed to KMT Legislator Chen I-hsin for sending flowers to Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang to express his support to the government’s virus-prevention measures.

Chiang explained that Chen had already said he would reflect on the incident, and reported to the Party Disciplinary Committee of his own accord to explain his actions.

Chiang said he respects the decision of the committee and believes that the committee will do its best to wrap up the incident without further ado.
